i am three months old at the new workplace now, and thought of taking stock of what i feel abt it...and what better time than when the pay commission is out.
Starting with the positives.. the corporate has established aims and goals , and well defined processes which are put in place by experts so that the corporate goals are achieved. Every employee is expected to know these goals and also trained by his immediate manager abt what responsibility the employee has at the micro level so that these goals are achieved.. this is what is lacking in my previous workplace...a formal process. We have some of the best experts in all the fields there but everyone works off in an individual manner completing his task in the best possible way, but there is a lack of a detailed and accurate process as it happens in the corporate.
Secondly the management is transparent and very effective .. i am not sure about the other teams but for my team it is the best. The appraisal process is very transparent, you know what your manager thinks about you clearly.. this thing is totally a black box in dept of space. You will never ever come to know what your manager has written about you in the appraisal, and given that the managers there are more of individual contributors ... scientists of high calibre , they clearly lack good management skills.. at least what ive seen.
Here it is not possible for someone else to claim your work.. thats the bestest part...you are rewarded well for what you do.. i am just three months old here and have got an award for good performance , and an appraisal rating that is the highest. to be honest the work i do here is just ten percent of what i used to do earlier... but then here i am with an award and an 'exceeds expected results' rating. This is clearly a major difference. The sixth pay commission talks about performance based increments for scientists.. but i am sure this would mean there will be more dissatisfaction amongst employees there ...as the way ppl get credit to the work done is not transparent. I think only satisfaction that can be got is the work.. and no other thing from the management... no doubt why the attrition rate is so high in dept of space.
The negatives now..
the work... :-) .. it is definetly not as challenging as what dos has to offer.. and i guess with time ppl get a (over) confidence about themselves as being the best .. which is totally wrong as the work does not allow them to tackle most of the computer science related problems... the only thing that matters is what value you add to a product.
the money... not that it is less..only that it is more... :-) .. i sincerely think the kind of money we get here for the work done.. is too irrational.(i am sure my manager doesnt read this :-) ). this is not a new thought .. i used to think the same way long back ... a phd in basic sciences or other field, gets less than what a btech computer science guy gets here , i am sure in US situation may be different.. but here the pay packages are irrational. but anyways i am loving it. :-)
not just posting here i am also drafting a mail to the management from my previous office to let know of what i think is best in corporate and how that can be implemented there.. hopefully they listen to me now .
will sign off with a quote from a colleague from my previous office .. i dont remember exactly his words but here is what he said at a time when i was feeling down there... how many times it happens that you give your 100 percent and get back 10% and you crib, but then you dont remember all the times when you give your 10 percent and get back 100%.
